Public Speaking

The Public Speaking course focuses on the fundamentals of the speech-making process and the skills required to craft and deliver well-organized and engaging speeches whose messages resonate with an audience. In this course the emphasis is on foundational knowledge and skills—including research, outlining, and analysis—to teach students to confidently and clearly convey information. Students who successfully complete the Public Speaking course in LaunchPad have demonstrated: • Understanding of the basic techniques of, and theory behind, the speech-making process • Mastery of public speaking skills and techniques to reduce speech anxiety • Understanding of how public speaking skills apply to group and professional settings • Improved skills in researching, supporting, and organizing ideas • Critical listening skills • Ability to develop audience-centered speeches for a variety of purposes or contexts, including to inform and to persuade, in person and online
