General Chemistry

The General Chemistry course is intended for college science majors and is typically offered as a two-semester or three-quarter sequence. The course provides a foundation for the key concepts in chemistry, which include atomic/electronic structure, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, bonding, molecular shape, states of matter, solutions, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and nuclear chemistry. A concurrent laboratory component may also be required, but is often considered to be a separate course. Students who successfully complete the General Chemistry course in Achieve have demonstrated: • Conceptual understanding and ability to articulate chemistry principles • Ability to apply concepts to quantitative problem solving • Ability to interpret information in a variety of formats and notations, such as graphs, tables, chemical equations, molecular structures, and depictions of laboratory equipment • Application of active learning methodologies to learning general chemistry • Ability to use technology to explore concepts and analyze data • Understanding through various formative and summative assessment • Preparation for additional coursework in chemistry
